Freon™ 134a is an HFC retrofit refrigerant for R-12.  It is used in medium- and high-temperature stationary commercial refrigeration, as well as chiller systems and home appliances. In addition, it can be used to retrofit existing R-12 refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

HFC-134a is included in the U.S. EPA SNAP de-listing of HFCs that will no longer be acceptable in new equipment in certain end use applications in the U.S. market. There are no U.S. regulations currently impacting the HFC service market. Refer to the Summary of U.S. EPA SNAP Regulations Pertaining to Refrigerants.

ASHRAE

R-134a; A1 Safety Classification

Replaces

R-12

Applications

  • Medium- and high-temperature:
    • stationary commercial refrigeration
    • chiller equipment
    • home appliances
  • Retrofit existing R-12 refrigeration and air conditioning equipment

Benefits

Broadly used in commercial and stationary applications.

Phaseout Schedule
Consult the specific regulations in your country or region.

Lubricant Recommendation
POE for stationary/commercial applications.

Since the phaseout of R-12, R-134a has grown to become the standard refrigerant choice for household appliances, small self-contained refrigeration units, very large chillers, and automotive air conditioning. It is also a component in many refrigerant blends on the market.

R-134a is an HFC refrigerant, which requires polyolester (POE) lubricant to be used in the compressor.
